Thomas R. Ziegler, MD is physician-scientist with significant experience in clinical and translational research (CTR), including mentoring, leading randomized clinical trials, and administration of research centers and training programs. His nutrition-oriented CTR, which focuses on nutritional support strategies and metabolomics in catabolic states such as malnutrition, critical illness, and infection (e.g. HIV, TB) is internationally recognized. He been continuously funded by NIH since 1996 by M01, R01, U01, R21, R03, P30, K24, and UG3 mechanisms and has published more than 172 original manuscripts. Dr. Ziegler has directly mentored over 60 mentees, including undergraduate students, medical students, MPH and Ph.D. graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, international physicians, and junior faculty; over 90% remain in CTR-related fields as faculty, advanced trainees, or in research-oriented positions at NIH or industry. He is currently co-mentor to BIRCWH trainee Erin Ferrante PhD, MPH, RN. He brings experience to the BIRCWH Executive Committee with leadership roles within the Atlanta Clinical & Translational Science Institute (ACTSI) as current Co-Program Director of the ACTSI Research Education, Training and Career Development program, Program Director of the ACTSI TL1 pre-doctoral program, Co-Program Director of the ACTSI KL2 post-doctoral program and Co-Director of the ACTSI Certificate Program in Translational Research. Dr. Ziegler also serves as Program Director of the ACTSI Clinical Research Network site at Emory University Hospital.
